We'll be writing novels in November!
During October, the sixth graders will do a lot of prep work for the novels that they'll be writing in November. Yes, novels! November is NAtional NOvel WRiting MOnth and students will be busy developing characters, creating plots, and setting goals. On November 1, the writing begins!
The workspace students use to write their drafts is a class wiki called Crescent Writers. They upload their edited work to the Young Writers Program portion of the YWP NaNoWriMo site at least once per week to check their goals..

Global Read Aloud
In 2011, sixth graders finished listening to the young adult novel Tuck Everlasting on October 12. Beginning in mid-September, our class participated in the Global Read Aloud Project in an online classroom with students from around the world. For GRA 2012 we listened toThe One and Only Ivan., a novel told from the perspective of the gorilla that lived in a cage at the B&I Circus Store in Tacoma for many years. This year, we'll be listening to Out of My Mind.

Spelling and Vocabulary City
Sixth graders are given a hard copy of their spelling lists on Mondays, but did you know that they can practice their words anywhere with an internet connection? Thanks to a grant from the Joyce Community Education Foundation, students can log into Spelling and Vocabulary City from school and home to play games, practice sentence dictation, etc. with their weekly spelling words.
Citation GeneratorsStudents are expected to cite sources for all information, graphics, and music that they use in papers and projects. This is a small sampling of citation generators available on the Web.
